"This is the day
That the Lord hath made,
I will rejoice and be glad in it."
- Psalms 118:24
Some days that's easier to do than others.  For example:

Win The Lotto Day: Easy.

Look I'm Handsome Day: Easy.

Just Woke Up And Realized I'm 30, not 50 Day: Easy.

The problem is most days don't work like that.  Most days have at least some elements about them that are very UN-rejoicable.  For example:

Bill Paying Day: Hard.

Bill Paying Day With No Money In The Bank: Harder.

Hey!  I Just Gain 4 Pounds Just By Breathing Air Day: Hard.

I Can't Remember If I Ate Breakfast Today Day: Hard.

The list goes on.  And on. And...well, you know.

Some days I hate that verse.

It's so stubborn.  And mouthy.  And out of touch with the real world.

It reminds me of that Pollyanna movie.  After 20 minutes, you just wanna slap the braids off Pollyanna.

That's because anybody with half a brain and who has been on the planet more than 15 minutes knows that there are SOME clouds that simply don't have silver linings.  They just have rain in them.  And hail.  And lightening.  That's reality.  That's truth.  Wake up.

And still, that verse just sits there.

Staring at me.

Mocking me.

Challenging me to look deeper.

Daring me to find not platitudes, but the true, authentic, "rejoicing-ness" of the day, in spite of the very hard realities that are also always a part of it.

Some days I hate that verse.

And some days, it saves me.

As together we stand and sing.

  1. Rock on, Brother Preacher! Rock. On.

  2. Your honesty with a smile is a rare gift! I grow weary of theological glosses by preachers who enjoy the sound of their words. You articulate the real feelings I find inside my chest and hear in the longings of others. Thank you!

  3. AC goes out today after spending 7K to get a new unit just 5 months ago: HARD.....
You own the best frisbee catching dog in the WORLD: EASY.....
